Basic Hypothesis Testing using Excel (DS102)
Basic Hypothesis Testing
- Student’s T-test.
- Mann-Whitney U-test (aka Wilcoxon Rank Sum test).
- Correlation (Pearson’s Product Moment, and Spearman’s Rank).
- Chi-Squared Test for Association.
In this Basic Hypothesis Testing Training Course, you will learn which tests are most appropriate for your data. You will also learn how to use Excel to carry out the required calculations and how to interpret and present the results.
This training course builds on our Making Sense of Data course and forms the next logical step in learning about Data Science.
Learn Hypothesis Testing Formulas using Excel
Statistics can help you make decisions about your data. Hypothesis Testing is the process by which you formulate a hypothesis, which you then test, in order to make a decision. For the basic hypothesis testing, decisions are about:
- Differences between samples.
- Correlations (relationships) between numerical variables.
- Associations between counts of instances in categories.
In the Basic Hypothesis Testing training course you will learn how to use Excel to carry out various forms of hypothesis testing, and which analysis to use in each case. Using simple data examples, you will learn how to use Excel formulas to carry out the necessary calculations, and how to interpret and present the results.
Excel makes a good introduction to Data Science and Hypothesis Testing, as it is a familiar and widely available program. Excel formulas can be used to conduct a range of hypothesis tests and statistical analyses.
In the Basic Hypothesis Testing training course you will learn how to use Excel formulas for the testing of various kinds of statistical hypothesis. You will also learn which hypothesis test is appropriate for your data.
Basic Hypothesis Testing Course Overview
This training course is about hypothesis testing using some basic classical statistical techniques. This course will give you a foundation in data analysis, as these classical methods of hypothesis testing form the foundation for most statistical methods.
In this Basic Hypothesis Testing Course, you will learn a variety of basic statistical tests and get some practice at carrying out the tests using your spreadsheet with simple data examples.
Who should attend
This training course is suitable for anyone who needs to learn about data analysis, regardless of their field of interest.

What to bring
You’ll simply need a computer and Excel spreadsheet software. Online courses are delivered using the Zoom software, which is available for Windows or Macintosh computers. Support material is supplied online, usually via Google Classroom.
How Long does the Hypothesis Testing Course Last?
The duration of this Hypothesis Testing Course is one day (starting at 9.30am and ending around 4.30pm).
Since COVID-19 online courses have been more popular. All our data training courses are available online, which means we can be flexible about dates. We can also arrange training at our main training centre in London, or at your workplace. At the moment there are no set dates for courses but you can to see details of forthcoming events.
Our main training centre is at 107, Cheapside, London EC2V 6DN. This is right in the heart of London and is close to Bank and St. Paul’s underground stations.
